WOOP It Up at CEO Works!

WOOP’ER!

The monthly CEO Works was held on January 26 was a WOOP’er!  Ty Hammond / One Mountain Leadership and LeBaron Meyers lead an interactive session using the WOOP method.

What is WOOP?

WOOP is a technique for goal setting that goes beyond simply stating what you want and why by rubbing it up against reality with anticipated challenges.WOOP stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, and Plan. The process involves identifying a specific Wish or goal, what the Outcome and benefits to achieving that goal would be (essentially your “why”), anticipating potential Obstacles that may prevent the goal from being achieved, and creating a Plan to overcome those obstacles. The idea is to help individuals clarify their goals and develop a strategy for achieving them when inevitable hurdles arise.

At our event, participants were prompted to write down their greatest professional goal for 2023, the intended outcome of achieving that goal, and their anticipated obstacles to reaching it. Through this exercise, it became clear that while individual goals vary, the obstacles encountered in achieving them often overlap.

A group discussion of obstacles generated a list of more than 20 major obstacles that participants foresee to their 2023 goals. The top 5 reported were:

Top Obstacles

  1. Ability to focus on Big Picture (strategic vs urgent priorities)

  2. Time management

  3. Raising working capital, funding

  4. Finding skilled leadership, advisors and employees

  5. Leadership team alignment and collaboration

As you reflect on your own professional goals for 2023, you might consider whether these obstacles are also familiar speed bumps on your own path to success. Future CEO Works gatherings will address these and other topics through generative group discussion, information sharing, expert presentation and mutual support. By identifying and addressing our challenges collectively, we can support each other in achieving our goals and drive progress in our businesses and community.
