Joby Taps NVIDIA to Accelerate Next-Era Autonomous Flight
Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE:JOBY) announced a major collaboration with NVIDIA, naming Joby as the exclusive aviation launch partner for the new NVIDIA IGX Thor platform.
Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture, the industrial-grade IGX Thor is designed for next-generation physical AI applications. This unique partnership will significantly advance Joby's proprietary autonomous flight technology, Superpilot™, for both military and civil aircraft.
Integrating the powerful IGX Thor compute platform with Superpilot™ will unlock real-time autonomous capability, enabling the aircraft to interpret massive amounts of data from sensors to make instantaneous, safety-critical decisions.
Joby's Flight Research Lead, Gregor Veble Mikić, noted that the collaboration will enable a "new era of safety-first autonomy," complementing human pilots with "speed, precision, and stamina." The integration supports key functions for operational safety and performance, including:
Autonomous Mission Management: Determining optimal flight paths and adapting to real-time changes like weather or air traffic control.
Perception Processing and Sensor Fusion: Using high-rate data from Radar, LiDAR, and Vision sensors to ensure comprehensive situational awareness in all conditions.
Predictive System Health Monitoring: Anticipating maintenance needs before failures occur.
NVIDIA's support for functional safety standards on the IGX Thor platform allows Joby to pursue certifiable autonomy for both near-term defense applications and long-term civil operations as the FAA expands the capabilities of national airspace.
