Green Tech 2021: Highlights, Recording, Transcript

05.05.2021 Green Tech.jpg

Our 6th Annual Green Tech was a healthy bright light on our community and the world. 17 companies & people gave us a look into the local projects and the path away from global warming. Below is a snapshot, the recorded sessions, and the transcripts. And don’t forget to join us for GET HIRED 2021 if you would like to intern or get a job at one of these companies.

Snapshot

May 5

  • Congressman Jimmy Panetta

    • What is unfolding in our nation's capital will set the course for America over the next decade

    • President Biden unveiled a three trillion dollar infrastructure proposal to fund clean energy investments, traditional infrastructure, affordable housing, education, social infrastructure, and more

    • Authoring and promoting a Microgrid Act, Save Our Forests Act, and Ebike Act to promote resilience and green technology

  • PNNL - Matthew Paiss

    • We are developing tools to detect when fires actually break prior to the time they actually land on the ground, milliseconds in some cases

    • We research how systems are operated, how they're controlled, how energy storage and the grid function, are designed and how they're planned

    • We work with a consortium of DOD funded labs, thousands of scientists, and industry organizations

  • OurEnergy - Dustin Jolley

    • Our Energy focuses specifically on new, resilient, modern energy systems, and microgrid projects

    • The primary driver for microgrid projects these days is energy resilience, but it also facilitates participation and can be a money saving measure

    • While micro grids are a new tool for us, the macro grid is still relevant and the business models of the utilities that own and operate systems are changing

  • SupplyShift - Alex Gershenson

    • In many cases over 90 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions come from the supply chains

    • We’ve built a software network that allows companies to engage with their suppliers, understand who the suppliers are and where they are and how much they're emitting.

    • We've created a suite of tools so that suppliers don't have to calculate their carbon themselves

  • Sustainable Systems Research Foundation - Ronnie Lipschultz

    • We have two microgrid systems that we are designing in Santa Cruz and Watsonville

    • The Watsonville project is a pilot for our end poverty in California with solar initiative designed to provide basic income through sale of solar electricity

    • Visions for our energy future can be realized with our communities political and financial support

  • Mynt Systems - Derek Hansen

    • We started the company primarily because we saw a lot of need in the market and what we should be doing for sustainability in the mid-market commercial industrial real estate space

    • A new energy future is a network of kind of disparate or distributed energy assets across the midmarket commercial industrial real estate space

    • First, we first look to reduce the energy consumption of the building of the facility, and then we look to offset the rest

  • Moss Landing Energy Storage - PG&E Max Ernst

    • We're expecting this product to save our customers one hundred million dollars over the 20 year life we expect to achieve operations in Q3 of this year

    • The great thing about energy storage facilities located in Moss Landing is that they charge during the day when solar production is high, and discharge when demand increases in the early evening

  • Save Our Shores - Gail McNulty

    • We must look with humility at the ways the tech sector and all California industry are both helping and harming people in the planet

    • The June 10th Oceanian Climate Justice Summit will serve as a catalyst for our ongoing community of practice aimed at cultivating and nurturing the transformation needed in our region

    • We have to go back to our roots, go back to where we come from as humans, to have that foundation right, so we can really move forward with solutions

  • City of Santa Cruz - Tiffany Wise-West

    • We're driving toward green jobs leading to better outcomes for our city’s core condition

    • People care about a resilient, safe, healthy and sustainable Santa Cruz that prioritizes voices that maybe haven't been heard in the past

    • We're thinking about how can we design, promote and fund our coastal resiliency projects, our transportation, water, parks, infrastructure and build our ecosystem and relationships with workforce development partners.

  • Bird Rides - Robert Singleton

    • The majority of micromobility riders have income less than $50k.

    • Government Partnerships Manager for Bird in the Pacific Northwest, Rockies, and Central California, will provide an overview of the state of micromobility, while offering some predictions about what the future may hold.

    • We want to help bolster your existing transportation options and help you solve that last mile problem

  • Joby Aviation - JoeBen Bevirt

    • The aircraft can take off and land vertically, is incredibly quiet, and has zero emissions when running off of a clean electricity grid

    • It is an incredible opportunity to deliver people time savings, get them to their destinations as much as five times faster, and we believe that this is a solution that really scales globally

    • A service that's seamlessly integrates multimodal journeys

  • Ambient Photonics - Bates Marshall

    • Provides power to devices and electronics manufacturers thereby avoiding battery waste, expenses, and associated environmental problems

    • Our product uses a very low cost, printable manufacturing process, which enables us to deploy our first pilot scale manufacturing line in the Santa Cruz

    • Ambient’s cell costs less, is more reliable, and produces less waste than battery solutions

  • Concentric Power - Amy Tomlinson

    • Implements systems to provide reliable power in a renewable and affordable fashion

    • In the business of making intelligent microgrid infrastructure

    • Helps customers realize how to get zero carbon power procurement by way of adding micro credits to their facility or their community

  • VeriCool - Darrell Jobe / Cheree

    • Produces packaging from biodegradable starch-based materials that dissolve in water

    • Darrell is a huge advocate for fighting prison recidivism not only because he experienced it firsthand, but because this is the community that he is familiar with.

    • Rapidly expanding from Livermore and New Jersey, and opening two more sites, one in Winston-Salem and another in Chicago

  • Piersica / Claudiu Bucur

    • Piersica is developing non-flammable batteries

    • Has a proprietary approach to a very high energy density holy grail for the world of anodes

    • Addresses a multi-billion dollar market to supply, partner, and license battery tech

  • NuScale - Rudy Murgo will discuss their small modular reactor innovations.

    • Developed a small modular reactor that generates carbon free base-load electricity

    • The reactor is reimagined, focusing on safety. It's flexible, simple, small and scalable

    • NuScale’s system integrates very well with the existing carbon free intermittent resources

  • Orange Charger - Nicholas Johnson

    • Provides a charging solution for people living in multiple dwellings

    • Built a mobile app and website that allows landlords to manage all the devices, collect payment from the driver's side and see how much you're actually spending.

    • Looking for pilot sites to scale our product deployment
