One of the subsidy recipients of Santa Cruz Accelerates was SmartBins, recently renamed Purcell. In an update this week, we learned that 2021 has been an incredible year of growth for Purcell. Why? Because the disruption caused by Covid-19 resulted in some significant positive changes in retail, particularly to supply chain and store operations. And this is Purcell’s sweet spot.

Today, the global food system is dominated by single-use plastic pre-packaged products. What problems does this create?

  • Pre-packaged products are operationally inefficient: touched 3 times per day for stocking, rotation, inventory, and facing.

  • Packaging is approximately 30% of the cost of what you purchase.

  • Many packages are 50% empty creating an inefficient supply chain.

The Purcell solution realizes a hyper-efficient value to both retailers and brands.

“With online fulfilment gaining market share we need to look at how and where we are packaging the products we use every day. We see a significant percentage of sales with the S1 dispenser as the online backend fulfilment platform. This gave retailers double the margins on sales converted to Purcell.” -David Conway, Founder Purcell

Since the launch of the S1 Dispenser, Purcell has worked with many of the world's largest retailers and food companies.

Purcell is currently working with Nestle, the world's largest food company in San Francisco. If you are interested in seeing what Purcell and package-free, plastic-free shopping is all about, visit:
