Joby Aviation Kicks Off Texas Flight Campaign as Autonomous Aircraft Crosses the Country

This week, Joby Aviation is proving out two sides of its business at the same time. Joby Aviation is running two major demonstrations at once: a week of electric air taxi flights in Dallas-Fort Worth and a coast-to-coast tour of its autonomous cargo aircraft.
In North Texas, the company is flying its electric air taxi on real routes around Dallas-Fort Worth as part of the state's first flights under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). At the same time, its autonomous J208 aircraft is partway through a month-long, ten-state tour demonstrating cargo and logistics capabilities for both civilian and military use.
Texas Flights Mark a New Phase for eIPP
The Dallas-Fort Worth campaign, running September 10 through 14, is being conducted under TxDOT's Project Nexus proposal, part of the Department of Transportation's eIPP initiative announced in March 2026. Flights include a kickoff demonstration at Fort Worth Alliance Airport, a landing at DFW's Corporate Aviation FBO, a round-trip flight over Arlington and the Fort Worth Stockyards, and a route connecting Alliance to Toyota's North American headquarters in Plano.
The effort builds on years of joint research between Joby, the FAA, and NASA, dating back to 2018 studies of air taxi integration in North Texas. A 2023 simulation at NASA's Future Flight Central facility looked at running up to 50 electric air taxi operations per hour in the DFW terminal area. Joby has also leased a 45,000-square-foot facility at Perot Field to support the campaign and its longer-term presence in the region.
JoeBen Bevirt, Joby's founder and CEO, framed the state as a natural fit for the next stage of aviation: "I'm incredibly excited by the potential for vertical lift in Texas, a state with the infrastructure, expertise, and partnerships to help lead the next era of American aviation. With TxDOT's leadership and support, the eIPP gives us an incredible opportunity to bring our aircraft into urban areas and accelerate our path to commercial service. This is just the beginning of what Texas and Joby can build together."
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford tied the flights to the agency's broader certification work: "Advanced Air Mobility vehicles are the future of aviation and these demonstrations in Texas are critical to getting us there. The FAA is leveraging data from test flights in Texas and across the country to ensure these new aircraft integrate safely into the airspace."
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy added: "Under President Trump, we are unlocking the future of flight and empowering innovators to build and test these exciting aircraft right here in the U.S. Today marks another critical step in our work to reshape how people and products move for the better."
The J208's Cross-Country Autonomy Tour
Running alongside the Texas campaign is the J208, a converted Cessna Caravan carrying Joby's autonomous flight system. The aircraft departed Concord, California on September 8 and is making stops in ten states, including a visit to Alliance Airport on September 10 that overlaps directly with the Texas eIPP kickoff.
The J208's route also includes Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, the Outer Banks in North Carolina near the site of the Wright Brothers' first flight, UPS Worldport in Louisville, and stops tied to the five-state uFLY coalition in Utah, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Oregon. In North Carolina, the aircraft supports NCDOT's eLIFT-NC initiative, which is building a statewide aviation network for healthcare logistics and emergency medical response.
The autonomy system behind the J208 traces back to Xwing, which Joby acquired in 2024. The aircraft has logged more than 400 flights and 800 automated flight hours, and has been tested in three military exercises, including Agile Flag, where it delivered replacement parts that got another aircraft back in service roughly 24 hours sooner than a conventional logistics run, and REFORPAC, a Pacific logistics exercise where it was operated from ground stations nearly 4,000 miles away in Guam.
Bevirt described the goal behind the autonomy push: "Autonomous flight can transform how we deliver essential supplies, respond to emergencies and support our servicemen and women. We've already demonstrated this technology in demanding military exercises. Now, we're taking it across America to show how the aircraft can integrate into our national airspace in order to serve communities, strengthen our logistics networks and help keep people out of harm's way."
Even with the autonomy branding, flights currently run under a supervised model: a ground-based Remote Pilot acts as Pilot in Command, managing flight plans and air traffic control communications, with a monitoring pilot on board for select operations.
Two Tracks, One Tour
Both efforts fall under Joby's 2026 Electric Skies tour, a nationwide showcase tied to the country's 250th anniversary. The company says the Texas flights are meant to generate the real-world data the FAA needs to write safety rules for commercial air taxi service, while the J208's cross-country run is meant to show that autonomous cargo flight can work at scale, in both civilian and defense settings. Joby is currently in the fifth and final stage of FAA type certification for its passenger aircraft.
