No Screens, No Streams: Santa Cruz Scene Is A Calendar Built for Showing Up
If you have ever scrolled past a social media post claiming Santa Cruz has "no culture," the team behind Santa Cruz Scene has a short answer: Santa Cruz is poppin. The free community calendar at santacruzscene.com gathers in-person events from across the county into one place.
Built by locals for locals
Santa Cruz Scene is run by a collective of residents who wanted to push back on the idea that the area is quiet. Their goal is simple: make it easier for people to find local happenings so more folks show up, and so the producers and organizers behind those events can thrive. Other community calendars exist, but the Scene aims to be the most complete and cohesive weekly snapshot of what is going on.
In person, on purpose.
The site has one firm rule. Every listing must be something you can physically attend. No webinars, no livestreams, no virtual hangouts. That focus shapes the whole experience: the calendar reads like an invitation to get out of the house, whether that means a jazz set at Kuumbwa, a monarch butterfly walk at Natural Bridges, or a Pokémon club at the Watsonville library.
How it works
Visitors can browse what is happening today or this weekend, or filter by date, neighborhood, and category. Categories range from music, comedy, and festivals to outdoors, wellness, LGBTQ+, cultural events, surf, and a dedicated free section. The "Around the County" view breaks listings down by area, from the Downtown to the Westside and Midtown to Aptos, the San Lorenzo Valley, Scotts Valley, Watsonville, and the North Coast. Beyond the calendar, the site offers a surf report, a farmers market guide, seasonal guides (a Halloween roundup is live now), and a monthly newsletter with local discounts and curated picks.
Where the listings come from
Events are pulled from venue and organization calendars, including the public libraries, UC Santa Cruz, and local venues, plus submissions from readers. Imported listings are checked automatically, and every reader submission is reviewed by a person before it goes live. Featured events are hand picked by the team, and each event page includes a way to report problems.
Free to post, free to share
Hosting a show, a market, a paddle-out, or a gallery night? Organizers can submit events at no cost. Businesses and neighborhood sites can also embed a free widget showing the next five events in a specific town or category, kept up to date automatically. The project is supported by local backers including The Hook Outlet, Treehouse, and the Santa Cruz County Business Council. You can follow along on Instagram at @cruzscene, or head straight to santacruzscene.com and pick something to do tonight.
