CITRIS STEM Hosting Weekend Workshop: ¡Valle! Get Your Start in Tech!

The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) at UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced are hosting ¡Valle! Get Your Start in Tech! weekend workshop, taking place January 30 – February 1, 2026, at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center on the UCSC Coastal Science Campus. ¡Valle! fosters diversity in STEM by increasing the accessibility of undergraduate students in STEM to research experiences, graduate school, and tech careers. This program is designed to equip students with the skills, confidence, and connections needed to pursue rewarding careers in the tech industry. All undergraduates are encouraged to apply! Students can apply online.

¡Valle! has been offered at UC Merced since 2020, and we’re excited to expand the program to UCSC for the first time.

During the ¡Valle! weekend, students will:

  • Enhance Communication and Networking Skills: Build valuable relationships with peers, mentors, and industry professionals.

  • Hands-On Learning: Acquire a new coding skill through Google Earth Engine and explore drone technology.

  • Explore Tech Career Pathways: Discover the diverse opportunities in the tech industry.

  • Boost Your Confidence: Build a sense of belonging in STEM.

  • Application Preparation: Get help crafting application materials for your future adventures.

  • Community Building: Connect with fellow students and expand your professional network.

  • Enjoy the Experience: Have fun as a cohort.

Students can earn up to $150 for their participation, and there will be a raffle with fun prizes. All meals will be provided, including a special networking dinner at a restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz.

Who can apply?

Undergraduate students are invited to apply for the workshop. First and second-year students are encouraged to apply, as well as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino/a, and Native American/Alaskan Native, womxn, LGBTQA+ identities, and students who are blind or deaf. All applicants will be considered without regard to race, gender, or other demographics.
Applications are due 11:59 PM on January 20, 2026. Students can apply online.
