California’s Economic Future: A Fireside Chat with the State Treasurer

On August 20th, 2025, the Santa Cruz County Chamber of Commerce will host a conversation with California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, offering an opportunity for residents, business leaders, and policymakers to gain insight into the state’s economic direction. As California navigates a post-pandemic recovery, tackles housing affordability, and leads the charge on climate action, the Treasurer’s Office plays a central role in managing the state’s financial health. The event will take place from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Back Nine Grill & Bar, 555 Highway 17, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.

Treasurer Ma, first elected in 2018 with more votes than any treasurer in state history and re-elected in 2022, is the first woman of color and the first woman Certified Public Accountant (CPA) elected to the position. Treasurer Ma oversees an investment portfolio averaging over $200 billion and manages more than $3 trillion in banking transactions annually. She provides oversight and transparency for the state’s investments, surplus funds, and bond sales, serving over 2,200 local governments. Her office helps finance key infrastructure projects that support housing, transportation, recycling, public facilities, and more—impacting the everyday lives of Californians across the state.

The fireside chat format will allow for an engaging and informative dialogue. Topics expected to be covered include the state’s economic outlook, access to capital for small businesses, and the role of public investment in fostering sustainable and thriving communities. Treasurer Ma will share her perspective on California’s economic outlook and how local businesses can best access funding and support.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with business leaders and stay informed and engaged in California’s economic landscape. Light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be provided.

This fireside chat is expected to draw significant interest, and early registration is encouraged. Tickets are available for purchase on the Santa Cruz County Chamber of Commerce website. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for organizations wishing to support public discourse on California’s economic future.
