Bay of Life

The Bay of Life project is a collaborative effort by renowned nature photographer Frans Lanting and writer Christine Eckstrom to document and celebrate the rich biodiversity of Monterey Bay. It's not just about showcasing the beauty of the area, but also highlighting the complex relationship between human activity and the natural world.

Here are some key aspects of the Bay of Life project:

  • Focus on Monterey Bay: The project specifically focuses on Monterey Bay, California, which Lanting and Eckstrom consider to be one of the "crown jewels" of our planet's natural heritage.

  • Multi-Faceted Exploration: The project incorporates various mediums to tell the story of the Bay. This includes stunning photographs by Lanting, informative writing by Eckstrom, and potentially even videography.

  • Exhibition: A central part of the project is the "Bay of Life: From Wind to Whales" exhibition. This debuted at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History in January 2023. The exhibition aimed to present a unified view of the Monterey Bay ecosystem, showcasing the interconnectedness of land and sea.

  • Conservation through Education: The Bay of Life project goes beyond simply documenting the Bay. It has a strong educational and engagement component, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and inspire action to protect this special place. Lanting and Eckstrom collaborate with local partners to achieve this goal.

Overall, the Bay of Life project is a beautiful and informative exploration of the wonders of Monterey Bay, while also serving as a call to action for conservation.
