Your Child Is Already Using AI. Are They Ready for It?

AI literacy will matter in nearly every career. But preparing children for an AI economy requires more than teaching them how to prompt a chatbot.

This article was inspired by Peter H. Diamandis’s “Your Child Is Not Ready”, which argues that schools are not moving quickly enough to prepare students for an economy increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

The question matters because children are already using it.

According to the 2026 Common Sense Media Census on AI use, 86 percent of children ages 9 to 17 use or interact with AI, and nearly one-quarter use it every day. Among children who use AI, 85 percent have used it for homework or schoolwork.

But exposure is moving faster than education. Only 56 percent said they had been taught how to use AI safely, and just 51 percent had discussed how to determine whether AI-generated information is accurate and trustworthy.

That gap may be more important than whether a school formally allows or bans ChatGPT.

Using AI is not the same as understanding it

Teaching students how to write prompts is useful, but AI literacy requires more.

UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework for Students emphasizes understanding AI’s limitations, evaluating its output, recognizing ethical concerns and knowing when human judgment should remain in control.

That distinction matters because AI can either support thinking or replace it.

A student who asks a chatbot to write an essay has outsourced much of the work. A student who uses AI to compare arguments, challenge a draft, explain a difficult concept or generate competing ideas is using the same technology very differently.

Early research suggests structured use can help. A Harvard randomized trial found that students using a purpose-built AI tutor learned more in less time than students in an active-learning classroom. A Stanford study of Tutor CoPilot also found improved math outcomes when AI helped human tutors ask better questions and guide students through problems.

The important point is that neither system simply handed students answers.

Dependence is already showing up

Among children who use AI for homework, 16 percent told Common Sense Media they have difficulty starting or completing work when AI is unavailable. Among daily AI homework users, that rises to 28 percent.

Children are also using AI for much more than school. The same survey found that 57 percent of AI users had sought information or advice about their health or body, 49 percent about their future or goals, and 37 percent about feelings or personal problems.

That is why organizations including UNICEF have called for stronger safeguards around privacy, safety and child development.

AI can be a powerful tutor, research assistant and creative tool. It should not quietly become a replacement for independent thinking, teachers, parents or trusted adults.

What AI readiness should look like

Preparing children for AI should mean teaching them to:

  • Try solving a problem before asking AI.

  • Verify AI-generated information rather than assuming it is correct.

  • Understand what personal information should never be shared.

  • Use AI to improve their work rather than produce it entirely for them.

  • Recognize when a teacher, parent or other human expert is a better source.

Banning AI altogether is unlikely to prepare students for the workplace they will enter. Unrestricted access is not preparation either.

For Santa Cruz, where startups and established companies are increasingly integrating AI into their work, this is also a workforce question. Students will graduate into jobs where AI-assisted writing, research, coding, design and analysis are increasingly normal.

The advantage will not simply go to the people who know how to use AI. It will go to those who know when to trust it, when to challenge it and when to think without it.
