About Clean Oceans International

COI started in 2008 as a grassroots effort after its founders saw the scale of plastic pollution firsthand on a voyage through the Panama Canal. First launched as The Clean Oceans Project, the group set out to find, collect and recycle ocean plastic with minimal environmental and financial impact.

In 2015 it became Clean Oceans International, with a sharper focus on science, innovation and Portable Plastic Waste Conversion (PPWC) systems. Today COI continues to pursue practical, community based solutions to reduce plastic pollution around the world.
