Maryam Tebyani
-Co-Founder & CEO, Stork Labs Medical
“Maryam Tebyani has emerged as one of Santa Cruz County's most impactful young innovators, bridging the worlds of academic research and healthcare entrepreneurship in ways that could transform lives.
As CEO and Co-founder of Stork Labs Medical, Maryam is tackling a crisis that affects nearly 1 in 3 birthing people in the United States: unplanned cesarean deliveries. The US spends over $65 billion annually on maternity care yet ranks 56th globally in maternal mortality. Stork Labs is developing flexible, semi-autonomous operative vaginal delivery tools using advances in soft robotics to help obstetricians avoid unnecessary surgical interventions. The company has already won recognition from the UCSF-Stanford Pediatric Device Consortium, completed the NSF I-Corps program, and is building momentum toward clinical validation. As a woman in engineering, Maryam recognized a unique opportunity to apply her robotics expertise to a field that has long been underserved by technological innovation.
This year alone, Maryam has been a co-author on multiple high-impact publications advancing bioelectronic wound healing technology. Her work appeared in Scientific Reports (November 2025), npj Biomedical Innovations, Advanced Materials Technologies, and Communications Biology. She was instrumental in developing the "a-Heal" smart bandage system that accelerates wound healing by 25% compared to standard care, a device that combines AI, machine learning, and bioelectronic drug delivery. She designed key components of the PDMS devices and contributed to animal studies validating these life-changing technologies. Her doctoral research at UC Santa Cruz, completed in 2024, focused on flexible robotic systems and bioelectronic devices for drug and small molecule delivery.
Maryam's journey reflects the best of what Santa Cruz's innovation ecosystem can produce. She came to UC Santa Cruz as an undergraduate, conducted research at NASA JPL and NASA Goddard, studied soft robotics at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and earned her PhD while co-founding a startup that could revolutionize women's healthcare. Her work is published in journals like Soft Robotics and Advanced Materials Technologies. She holds patents for multi-material flexible robotic systems and bioelectronic wound care devices.
What makes Maryam exceptional is her ability to see opportunities where others see obstacles. When she attended a medical device workshop in 2017 and noticed that cutting-edge robotics were being applied almost exclusively to endoscopic procedures, she asked: why not childbirth? That question has become a company, a mission, and potentially a revolution in how we approach maternal health. She represents the future of healthcare innovation in our region.”
