X Academy's Team Hephaestus has earned their place among the best young engineering minds in the world. After months of rigorous preparation, the team has traveled to St. John's, Newfoundland to compete in the 2026 MATE ROV World Championships, one of the most prestigious underwater robotics competitions on the planet.
On Sunday, 23 students and 5 chaperones departed SFO Airport, arriving in Newfoundland in the early hours of Monday morning. All 18 bags of critical equipment, including their ROV, float system, tools, and spare parts, made the journey intact. With their technology and their determination securely in hand, Team Hephaestus stepped onto the world stage ready to compete.
Preparation Meets Opportunity
The team wasted no time. Following a brief rest, engineers Rowan and Sam verified that the ROV had survived travel without issue. The team then gathered for a goal-setting session, grounding themselves in purpose before the competition began. Practice runs of mission tasks, preparation of their marketing display, and focused work on their 15-minute Engineering Presentation filled the days that followed. Each student arrived with something to prove and something to learn.
Connecting to the Mission

A morning walk along St. John's harbor offered more than fresh air. Students observed working cargo ships and engaged in conversation about Newfoundland's unique marine environment, deepening their understanding of this year's competition theme: the cryosphere. A subsequent tour of the Marine Institute, a world-class ocean and marine technology center and this year's host institution, brought those ideas into even sharper focus. For these students, the competition is not simply a test of engineering skill. It is an invitation to understand the real challenges facing our oceans.
Rising to the Challenge
At Regionals, the team identified the Safety Inspection and Float Mission as areas requiring further development. Through months of careful refinement and attention to detail, they returned to those tasks at Worlds and earned full points on both. It is the kind of growth that defines exceptional teams: honest self-assessment followed by disciplined improvement.
Gratitude and Community
Team Hephaestus did not arrive in Newfoundland alone. This journey was made possible through the steadfast partnership of Dr. Farris Sabbah and the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, as well as the generosity of the many families, donors, and sponsors who invested in these students. Their belief in this team is reflected in every task completed, every point earned, and every connection made.
The competition is ongoing. Those wishing to follow Team Hephaestus live may do so through the official MATEinspires1 channel on Twitch.
Santa Cruz County has much to be proud of. Go, Team Hephaestus.
